Retainers

Your retainers are designed to hold your teeth in their new positions. It is important that they are worn according to the instructions given to you.  And make sure you bring them with you to each appointment.

For the first three months, you will wear your retainers all the time, even when you are sleeping. After the first three months, you will only wear them at night.  They may be removed while eating, or playing vigorous sports. In two or three days your speech will return to normal with the retainers in place. Avoid flipping your retainers out with your tongue. This can cause breakage of your retainers.

Clean your retainers by brushing them daily with cold water. Retainer cleaner – RetainerBrite – can also be used for a more thorough cleaning.

Never wrap your retainers in a napkin, tissue, or a paper towel. You or someone else may throw it away. Don’t put them in your pocket or you may break or lose them. Whenever they are not in your mouth they should be in its plastic retainer case.

Keep your retainers away from dogs as they love to chew them. Avoid storing them near any source of heat. Do not boil your retainers to sterilize it! If needed, bring it them to our office and we will be happy to disinfect them for you.
